THE OFICINA ESPACIAL is an architecture, design, and city studio based in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. We conceive and execute projects of various scales, including objects, furniture, interior design, scenography, exhibition design, and buildings. We are a multidisciplinary team of architects, designers, and artisans who build most of their own projects in collaboration with other suppliers and partners. We work collaboratively, bridging the gap between design and manual creation.
The firm was founded in 2015 by architect and urban planner PC Lopes, stemming from his desire to... To materialize ideas by participating in all stages of production . Since 2016 we have occupied a historic building in the Varadouro neighborhood, on the banks of the Sanhauá River, alongside houses and old warehouses of Porto do Capim.
Regardless of the scale of the projects, we think holistically, reflecting on historical, cultural, social, environmental, and economic issues.
We are not only interested in the final result, but also, and especially, in the process. We start from needs, dreams, and realities, seeking solutions in everyday life, in the urban environment, in nature, and in people. We strive to translate everything with constructive rationality, essentiality, quality, and comfort . We have our own continuous work process, yet it is very organic and open to new possibilities.
We develop and produce durable, practical, and authentic furniture and objects.
We use raw materials in an environmentally responsible way, such as reforestation wood, reclaimed wood, and natural finishes. We love to see and feel the smells, textures, colors, densities, and other properties of materials during our production process, always experimenting with new solutions. Therefore, we have our own local production of small batches or made-to-order items. We combine manual skills with current techniques and resources, mainly in carpentry, metalwork, and woodturning.
